Geo Graphical Location and Promotion - January 28th, 2006

So how does Geographical location affect Search Engine Promotion? It is obvious that a .co.uk domain name will appear in a Google UK Search; however this is not always the case. Why? Google is UN like the other search engines and will base a domains location on, not only on the ending eg: .co.uk but also the server location. If you are hosted in Germany then this restricts the chances of your site performing in the UK search listings.

There are some complex algorithms that work out where to place a site but it has been alleged that if a website has more links pointing to it from a specific GEO graphical location once the percentage of links are higher in one location than another Google is alleged to consider the site to have a similar location.

So what are the results for SEO? - If you are an International company this is good because as you build up world wide links this enables your company to step out of the localised market.

Google News - Censorship in China - January 27th, 2006

Latest news in the search engine marketing world concentrates on Google’s acceptance of China’s government restrictions on the search results it provides the people of China. This has expectantly started many a blog war discussing whether or not Google has done the right thing. Google however already filters many of it’s results across the globe. Removing, for example, any “Nazi” references in France and Germany and any specific DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) requests in the USA and the world. A disclaimer appears on the results page stating “Local regulations prevent us from showing all the results.”

A quote from Google founder Sergey Brin: “… if we got a specific government request. If a third party makes a DMCA claim that another party is violating copyright, and that party is not able to counter, then we are obligated to block that. ”

Now, is this Google going against their own rules?
