When it comes to commissioning a new web site, it is important to ensure that you as the web site owner have considered all the options.

Firstly, is the web site up to the correct standards in terms of accessibility? OK not every web site will be a perfect design and open to all web users but there are simple aspects of design that your design team should consider. Colours are a key factor for overall visiuals. Are you using a CMS or a template. Make sure If you are using a template that you have the right to use the template. There is so much Open source software on the internet that too many so called designers just change the relevant parts of the coding to make it there own. When using any other software you should be aware of how it is created and what implication it has on your SEO.

The design department at Just Search Ltd recently made the mistake of separating our Web Design Section from our Search Engine Optimisation Section. The mistake was not separating the two, the mistake was that we changed the link from our MAIN navigation that was pointing to a web design page with a Page rank of 4 to a new site with no page rank. After discussion within the department we decided that this could be detrimental to the website and the brand of Just Search Ltd.

We decided to re-attach the previous page of a Page Rank of 4. Please dont be alarmed as this will be updated, it has served its purpose but is no longer the standard that Just Search Ltd would like to represent its design department.

Today’s meeting:

We’ve discussed the points above and much more in today’s meeting. The New website of www.justdesigning.co.uk has a good look and meets all the SEO standards; this will be launched at the end of September 2005, however we believe in being the VERY BEST so having a Design site that looks good is not Good enough, we want to win awards. Our team is broken down into some of the best Graphic designers and Web programmers in the UK.

So we have got our work cut out for us; our site is currently fluctuating between positions 20 and 35 for the Phrase Search Engine Optimisation in Google. For a company that is Just under two years old we consider this to be a very good start and are constantly working to increase our listing. We are also now fluctuating around 480.000 mark on Alexa this means that from all the millions of websites (Google Search around 8 Billion alone) that are on the Internet we are in the top half a million.

Of course this is not good enough and we agree so to aid our workload the Managing Director of just Search Ltd is now paying for our Home Internet connections, I suppose its just another reason for our sleep deprivation but it keeps him happy and more importantly points the quality of work Just Search produces in the right direction.

Maintaining our website is a process of crossing all the T’s and dotting all the I’s. So we know that there are going to be some long nights ahead. But we know as a design team and a company that it is going to be worth it.

Mistakes can happen, even to the best of us. Pretending they don’t is a disillusion but positive and constructive criticism is the best way of learning from those mistakes. Our design team makes sure that each Activation or Website Design is passed for Quality Assurance. Once the whole team is happy we will upload the work.

On the 11th August 2005 we talked about the problems of companies using sub domains and their results in the search engine rankings.

One of our own clients who we carried out SEO work on was using a sub domain of its previous hosting company.

“The problem was the client then fell out of the rankings. After much research we could only come up with the result that the client site or sub domain was being penalised.”

We now know this was true as 6 days after our previous posting we have transferred the domain name to our name servers, we got the clients site spidered and then the results started coming in on 9 of the major search engine including Google, Yahoo and MSN.
