Website Usability

April 29, 2008

Does your website usability influence your search engine index rank? Do Search Engines favour good usability when it comes to website navigation?

Yahoo has indicated that search engines may look into the design elements of a website not just content based source readers. Yahoo has stated a long list of factors that should be considered when searching websites for good/ bad design practises. The compiled list includes 51 web page elements that can be analysed to determine usability and friendly navigation.

Below is a shortened list of testing requirements.
Total number of Links
Total number of words
Images that are not ad-based
Page area (content/image ratios)
Rows within tables
Total number of font sizes used
Page Weight

Creating analysis on the above data and informing webmasters of their website trends is a great idea. Consider the following

Your website has a healthy amount of traffic, your bounce rate is low but your sale figures are non-existent’ could this be due to poor design or bad navigation of your product range?

Even though Google already uses a similar policy Yahoo could now decrease its numbers of un-professional websites and help aid their search community by informing them of bad practises.
